In life, Jason was a truly gifted and unique individual that left a very positive mark in the lives of those who were lucky to have known him.  His death in a car accident in 1997 was a tragic loss for his family, his friends, the community of Glace Bay, and the community of his alma mater StFX University. A very young man at the time of his passing, Jason used his short life of 24 years to leave a very positive mark on the lives of all that knew him. He is someone who truly enjoyed life to the fullest while making friends with people of all walks of life along the way.

Growing up in Glace Bay, Jason participated in many community activities and sports teams including the Caledonia Police Boys Club, Minor Hockey from Atom through to Bantam “B”. His Bantam career culminated with the winning of a Provincial Championship with the IT Store Hawks in 1987. He also played High School Hockey and later returned to volunteer as a minor hockey coach.

Jason started his University career at the University of New Brunswick and then transferred to StFX University in Antigonish, NS. While at StFX Jason became heavily involved in the University Community serving as President of Lane Hall and Activities Commissioner of the Students' Union.

Jason's parents Tena and Jimmie Simmons along with his sister Sherri are active participants in the tournament each year. Although no tournament or activity can replace the loss of their much-loved son and brother, it is the genuine hope of the community that the tournament continues for years to come as a true sign of respect for Jason's memory and his positive approach to life.
